Nearly 80% of hair products aimed at black women contain chemicals linked to cancer, infertility and obesity, study finds

I'm so sick of black women being bamboozled and led astray by companies targeting people like you and me because they think we don't know any better.

They are trying to sell us products that are known -- KNOWN! -- to cause diseases and irreversable conditions like breast cancer, uterine fibroids, obesity and more.

Did you know they're even targeting your kids and grandkids? The ingredients in these products are creating early onset of  menstruation. We've got 6 and 7 year of little black girls out here getting their periods because of ...wait for it...hair lotions!

But now you know the truth because I spilled it all and I even called out some of these bs companies by name. Some of these that you have use for decades.

It's no wonder that black women purchase over 3x as many hair care products as any other demographic, while at the same time being 3 times more likely than white women to develop fibroids -- and we tend to develop them at a younger age than any other group of women.

Coincidence? I think not. But when you know better you do better. So come get this truth.

I'm so passionate about this topic that Essence Magazine reached out to get my expertise on  the top four hair product ingredients you should avoid. Here's what I told them:

1. Sulfates.
This ingredient creates suds. That's all it does. It doesn’t actually clean your hair.  We've been conditioned to believe that the more sudsy a product is, the cleaner your hair is getting. That's simple a lie they've been telling us for decades. In fact, its the primary reason why your hair is dry and won't retain moisture for the long-term. The sulfates that are in laundry detergents and dish washing soaps are often the same ones found in shampoos you wash your hair with. I tell people, ‘If you wouldn’t wash your hair with Tide,  don’t wash your hair with products that have sulfates in them. A popular one is sodium lauryl sulfate.

2. Parabens. This is known to be a carcinogen, which is a cancer-causing ingredient. Parabens are a preservative that keeps mold, mildew and yeast out of your styling cremes, hair milks, and the like. But they also are widely known to cause breast cancer. They're even banned in most parts of Europe, Asia and Africa. Stay away if you see ingredients that end with the word paraben. Examples include butylparaben, metylparaben, and others.
3. Benzyl alcohol and Isopropyl alcohol.  Not all alcohols found in hair products are bad, but most are, like isopropyl alochol, alcohol denat, alcohol sd 40 and benzyl alcohol, amongst others.  These alcohols are man-made in a lab and they suck moisture from you hair, causing it to be dry and brittle, which results in breakage and split ends. The good ones include cetyl, stearyl and cetearyl alcohol, which are derived from fruits and act as moisture-attracting ingredients.

4. Mineral oil.  This is a by-product of the distillation of gasoline from crude oil. It's often masked as parafinnium liquidum, but trust and believe it's the same. It's also very toxic. Besides being flat out gross, mineral oil prevents moisture from getting in your hair. This ingredient oftentimes can’t be removed sufficiently without using a sulfate-based shampoo, which  again causes brittleness and dryness.

Be mindful of what you use on your hair, scalp and skin. Since the skin is the largest organ on the body, it absorbs the products you put on it, and they go into the bloodstream, even from your scalp.
