What’s the first thing you think of when it comes to self-care? Candles, a stress- free wash day where detangling takes less than 10 minutes and snuggling up to a good book are easy go-to’s.
Yet, self-care doesn’t always have to look like warm robes, quick wash days and body butters. It can sometimes look like saying no, even when the world expects you to say yes.
Take a look at Simone Biles, for example. Simone’s been carrying, like so many of you, the pressure of excellence for years.
And while she always understands the assignment and her accolades speak for herself, her recent announcement that she would not participate in the Olympics after her first match was met with both celebration and resistance.
You see, sometimes self-care isn’t about refilling your cup – it’s about not letting anyone else pour into yours.
As a busy beauty with goals and aspirations, you want to be excellent. And it’s easy to think you should be further along … you could be doing more … you could have done this better and done that better.
But sometimes we just have to accept that we’ve done our best. And even if it doesn’t make sense to anyone else, even if we’re in the middle of a golden opportunity, the best thing to do for ourselves is to say no, take a break, and slow down.
Simone did exactly that … she stepped down from the competition and slowed down.
Let’s take a page from Simone’s book and find a way to slow down and pour back into ourselves.
So, what does that look like?
#1: Connecting with what lights you up Take a step back and truly ask yourself if you’re doing what you want or what others expect from you.
#2: Say no more often When you say yes to something, you’re inevitably saying no to something else. Check within yourself to see if those yeses are truly worth it or if you’re just experiencing FOMO.
